Conference
Cinema as a business – methods for reducing costs
and earning profits in a new digital reality
Venue: KIJÓW.CENTRUM, Al. Krasińskiego 34,
Kraków
Date: February 20-21, 2013
Eurocinema Expo 2013 is the third edition of an educational
event, which is organized in this part of Europe.
ECE 2013 is a meeting of representatives of culture, the film industry,
cinema business, new digital technologies specialists, providers of
equipment necessary in the cinema, as well as service providers to the
cinemas.
As announced in 2012, ECE 2013 is also a meeting place for SKSiL
affiliated cinemas.
The idea to organize Eurocinema Expo was born out of the statutory
mission of the Cinema Development Foundation, and also of the
involvement of Apollo Film in supporting the development of traditional
cinemas and idea of 4D media relations agency on a new formula of
industry conference.
Report from the conference ECE 2013
On February 21, the third issue of the two-day Eurocinema Expo
conference has ended in Cracow; the conference regarded the issue of
"Cinema as a business – how to reduce costs and make money in the new
digital reality”. The meeting was attended by around 250 participants
from around Poland and abroad. ECE 2013 is also an attractive program,
enhanced by training sessions and seminars for projectionists and
exhibition area.
This is the third time the society representing the technical cinema
business meet under the Eurocinema Expo project in the KIJÓW.CENTRUM in
Cracow. The conference is addressed to the owners and representatives of
cinemas, organizational units of local government and other entities
operating as cinemas. The project organizers invite institutions
supporting the development of cinemas in Poland, such as PISF and SKSiL,
as well as decision-makers in the development of culture and
cinematography and film distributors. 4D media relations and Apollo Film
once again prepared an interesting program; this is also the second time
the program includes training for projectionists. This year, the
training supported by the companies NEC and Barco, has been attended by
74 people. The courses covered the issues of supporting such products
as: digital projectors, digital cinema servers, lighting or sound
systems.

"Analysis of the Digitalization of Cinemas in Poland". Mrs. Anna
Sienkiewicz-Rogowska of the Polish Film Institute talked about the
current status of digitalization in Polish cinemas and development
prospects, and Mr. Jan Runge, President of UNIC (Union Internationale
des Cinémas) presented the details of the activities of theater
organizations in Europe, their mission and goals as well as what these
organizations offer to their affiliated cinemas. In his presentation, he
also touched upon the important issue that all cinemas should have one
agreed position e.g. in cooperation with distributors. Another major
thematic block involved "The Key Issues in the Business". Participants
could listen to lectures on e.g. lighting in cinemas, which was
discussed by: Mrs. Femke de Poorter of Philips Lighting and Andrzej
Wiśniewski of Osram. Mariusz Orzechowski of NEC Display Solutions
presented an attractive model for funding such a costly product as a
projector, and the company Cine Project Polska discussed the current
digital projection systems. The first day of the conference was
culminated by the a preview of the film "The Flight", preceded by
speeches of representatives of the UIP (United International Pictures),
a contents partner of the ECE 2013. Katarzyna Wójcik and Dominik
Dajewski discussed the film business and the new technologies for
sharing digital copies; they were accompanied by Matthew Aspray of
Motion Picture Solutions and Piotr Skotnicki of CINEsync. The first day
of Eurocinema Expo 2013 was complemented by a banquet in Kazimierz.
The second day of the conference began with a lecture on the funds for
further investments in cinemas and the issue of territorial marketing.
The block devoted to novelties in the cinema business included
presentations by Marek Kendall of NEC Display Solutions, Stefan
Tiefebrunner of Dolby Laboratories and Ryszard Jankowski of Kinekspert,
who presented the latest products dedicated to the cinema business. The
afternoon panel was dominated by such issues as: communication with
participants, promoting cinemas and content other than the films
displayed in cinemas. It was Christine Costello of More2Screen who
presented alternative opportunities to use cinemas for transmitting e.g.
concerts, ballet, and educational walks around the world’s major
museums. Whereas Orange Labs showed another option to encourage viewers
to visit cinemas. It has presented a sample of an interactive session,
i.e. the game titled “1812: The Heart of Winter”. The two-day conference
ended with the screening of the concert titled "Hungarian Rhapsody:
Queen live in Budapest 86’", courtesy of more2Screen.
